Winter Driving Tips
-
- Extreme cold is very hard on your transmission. As the temperature goes down, take time to warm up your car. This will in turn warm up the fluid in the transmission, helping the car to shift smoother.
- If you are stuck in the snow, never rock the transmission when shifting from reverse to drive without first making sure the wheels have stopped completely. After every snowstorm, somebody turns a minor tow into a major repair. Be careful, especially if you drive a Honda or an Acura.
- Some cars have special features for winter driving. Check your owner’s manual for your cars features (traction control, winter mode—features that allow the car to start in a gear other than first).
- If your car has 4-wheel drive capability, make sure you know how to activate it, and be sure to test it before the storm.
